FLORENCE RUSSELL

Florence Russell passed away at the age of 79 at St. Boniface Hospital on Wednesday, April 22, 2026.

Florence is survived by her daughters, Renay and Nicole (Scott Barrows) and grandsons, Grayson and Daniel Barrows. She was predeceased by her husband Wayne, parents (Ben and Olga Shellenberg) and her two brothers (Ronald and Harold Shellenberg).

Florence was born on July 13, 1946 in Portage La Prairie, moving with her family to Winnipeg when she was a child. She met Wayne while attending her friend's wedding, who happened to be his cousin. He asked her to dance and the rest was history.

Florence and Wayne moved to Brandon where they raised their family. She worked for many years at Inventronics and then Brandon Regional Health Centre. Following Wayne's death in 2022, she moved to Winnipeg to be closer to Nicole and her family. She enjoyed living at Misericordia Terrace, loving her apartment which had a great view of the city, her friends, the staff and her home care workers.

Florence was artistic, loved music, hummingbirds, elephants, watching medical shows, British dramas and Shirley Valentine, as well as having a slight addiction to buying Avon. She developed a newfound love of the Toronto Blue Jays, particularly her favourite players Bo Bichette and Addison Barger.

Her time in Winnipeg was joyful. A favourite activity was lunch at the Nook Restaurant, where being a patron of the arts, she appreciated and sometimes purchased artwork that was featured in the restaurant. One of the best parts of living in Winnipeg for Florence was the after school visits from her grandsons where they would share stories while they raided Granny's snack drawer.

Florence was a loving Mum, who taught her daughters to stand tall and have confidence in themselves. For that, they will always be grateful.

Special thanks to the staff at the Cardiac Unit at St. Boniface. At Florence's request, a private burial took place at Elmwood Cemetery.
